Warrior & Family Support Center

Joint Base Fort Sam Houston San Antonio, Texas

The Therapeutic Gardens at the Warrior and Family Support Center were designed to accommodate a wide range of physical challenges and to offer a place for Warriors and their Family Members to find peace and connect to nature, reducing stress and anxiety. Following the best practices of “Evidence-Based Design”, the Gardens were designed by Brian Bainnson with Quatrefoil, a nationally recognized landscape architect specializing in gardens in medical settings. Design elements were developed with input from leading medical professionals, therapists, and related experts and now provide wounded, ill and injured Warriors an optimum environment for healing and rehabilitation. Huffman served as the Project Manager for the gardens, overseeing design and construction on behalf of Returning Heroes Home, Inc. Huffman also served as the project’s general contractor. In 2015 the Gardens were recognized as the “Best Therapeutic Garden in the Country” by the American Horticulture Therapy Association. The Gardens were also highlighted as a case study for how to design gardens to serve veterans in the book “Therapeutic Landscapes: An Evidence-Based Approach to Designing Healing Gardens and Restorative Outdoor Spaces” by Clare Cooper Marcus and Naomi A Sachs.
